Adult services

We work with local departments of social services and community based organizations to coordinate services for the vulnerable adult population throughout Maryland to promote their safety, stability and independence. We believe in a person’s right to dignity, self-determination and to live in the least restrictive environment possible. Conducting investigations and providing services when those adults live in the community. Educating the public about prevention of elder abuse. This is accomplished through investigations, assessments and referrals to appropriate agencies and programs.


Adult Outpatient Centers provide assessment, diagnosis, and treatment to individuals requiring mental health or dual diagnosis treatment. The outpatient treatment team consists of trained professionals including psychiatrists, licensed therapists, psychiatric technicians, counselors, and support staff. Services offered include supportive counseling, information and referral, facilitating health care, adequate living arrangements and companion services. We investigate reports about abuse, abandonment, neglect, exploitation and self-neglect of vulnerable adults in Washington State. We collaborate with other agencies to offer protective services as needed.


Adult services

The Department of Social and Health Services’ Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (ALTSA) prioritizes the health and safety of its clients, staff and community members. An “at risk “ adult is defined as an individual years of age or older who is susceptible to mistreatment or self-neglect. Adult Protection (AP) connects an“at risk” adult with services and resources. It involves intake, investigation and assessment of referrals of abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation of impaired vulnerable adults who live in the community.


APS strives to reduce risk, maintain and enhance quality of life, promote self sufficiency and respect the right to self determination. APS social workers investigate and seek to correct situations of abuse and neglect. Our Adult Clinical Services programs are committed to helping individuals who are living with serious mental illness and substance use disorders. Our skilled staff assists individuals with housing, applying for benefits, linkage to community supports, independent living skills, and various other services.


Adult services

Adult Social Services also provides coordination and payment for burial and cremation services to Washoe County residents. Assistance with nutrition, medical needs and nursing home care. Social workers provide services that are focused on stopping the abuse and then helping the individual to develop a plan to remain in a safe environment. APS serves adults and older and dependent adults and older, who are harme or threatened with harm, to ensure their right to safety and dignity.


Adult services

APS investigates elder and dependent adult abuse, including cases of neglect and abandonment, as well as physical, sexual and financial abuse. Referrals of possible abuse can be made by anyone with knowledge of the abuse by calling the 24-hour response line: 800. The Division coordinates services to individuals who are or older and are the victims of actual or potential abuse, neglect, self-neglect or exploitation.
