Repair bifold doors

After a few years of use, bifold doors often start to sag, scrape against the floor or pop out of their brackets. Three basic adjustments will usually get them back on track. Bifold doors are anchored at the bottom and top of one side. On the opposite side a guide pin slides through a top channel.

Parts for these doors are readily available at home centers, hardware stores, or online. If you have a sliding closet door that glides on a bottom track, clean the track with a damp cloth to ensure smooth gliding.

Take down the door and pry the pivot out of the door edge with a flat-head screwdriver or pliers. Open the door to find a small screw that sticks out of the bracket. This is called the setscrew. Loosen the setscrew slightly. Close the door , and then push or pull the top of the door until it is lined up perfectly with the frame.

Make sure that both doors look like they line up, and once the alignment seems back on track, tighten the setscrew. The fix is to remove the pin, fill the hole with a dowel plug, and then re-drill a hole near the same location. Lift the door up and out at the bottom to remove it.

What are bifold doors and how do they work?

How do you remove bi-fold doors? How to replace bifold door hardware? Please know that bifold doors are equally easy to adjust and repair. There are only a few parts to the.

Always seems like what you want is on the side that is hidden with a slider. Do you have another type of closet door ? Here, we’re working with wooden bifold doors. To start, loosen the top pivot bracket setscrew with a screwdriver. Slide the bracket in the track until the door is parallel to the jamb. Tighten the setscrew firmly.

On some bifold doors , you may have to remove the door to get to the pivot bracket screw. To do this, pull the spring-loade upper pivot pin downward to release the top of the door. Repair an inner edge that is swinging out of place by fixing the spring loaded roller that allows the door to glide closed in the top rail. Spray the roller post with lubricating spray and depress the roller several times until it bounces back with no friction. Place the door flat across two sawhorses.

Measure the location of the roller where it is inserted into the door and write it down.

Use a pair of pliers and a screwdriver to pry and pull the rollers. Each pair of bifold doors is fixed in the opening by two pivot pins. A roller in the top of the second leaf keeps the door aligned as you open and close it. The pivot pins can get out of adjustment. Repairing interior bifold doors is a doable job for just about all homeowners.
