Quadriceps tendon repair

Quadriceps tendon repair

What is the recovery time for a quad strain? Small tears of the tendon can make it difficult to walk and participate in other daily activities. A large tear of the quadriceps tendon is a disabling injury. It usually requires surgery and physical therapy to regain full knee function.

Quadriceps tendon tears are not common. QUADRICEP TENDON RUPTURE - REPAIR PROTOCOL. Initial Visit: Dressing change. May start WBAT with brace locked in extension. At 2-weeks home E-stim unit (if needed) for quadriceps muscle re-ed.

What does the surgery involve for repair of a quadriceps tendon rupture ? Typically surgery involves making an incision on the front of the knee. Then strong sutures are placed into the tendon and tied back down to the top of the patella. Surgery generally takes between one and two hours. During surgery, the tendon is reattached to the top of the kneecap bone. The incision will need to allow access to the injured quadriceps tendon and the inferior pole of the patella.

A tourniquet may be inflated prior to incision. Partial weight bearing for weeks. Brace locked in full extension for weeks. Ice and modalities to reduce pain and inflammation.

Aggressive patella mobility drills. Range of motion – 0° to 30°knee flexion. Begin submaximal quadriceps setting. If the tendon is completely pulled off the patella, it is sutured back in place.

Rehabilitation Protocol. The knee must remain immobilized in a knee brace after the surgery. Patient should rest and avoid weight bearing for a multiple number of weeks.

Most often the torn tendon is re-attached to the knee cap by passing the tendon through drill holes in the knee cap for fixation. In some cases graft tissue may be added to the repair to obtain the desired length of the repaired tendon. In rare cases an “end-to- end” tendon repair may be done. Tendon Repair Ruptures of the quadriceps and patellar tendons are common in elite and recreational athletes. Most surgeons treat these injuries surgically to lessen the risk of long-term disability and morbidity.

Historically, open techniques have been used for rupture repairs but may be complicated by wound-healing issues and infection. One single incision can be made extending from the inferior pole of the patella to the ruptured portion of the quadriceps tendon. PHASE I (0-WEEKS) DATES: Appointments.

Protect surgical repair Precautions. Regain knee motion, begin Continuous passive motion machine 3. The sooner surgery is performed after an injury, the better the outcome will be. Early repair also keeps the tendon from scarring and tightening when in a shortened position.

Primary repair of acute rupture approach midline incision to knee repair longitudinal drill holes in. Both quadriceps and hamstring isokinetic testing correlated significantly with Lysholm and Tegner scores. Conclusions: Most patients with bilateral simultaneous and unilateral tendon repairs can expect a good range of motion and return to their previous occupation, but many have persistent weakness and difficulty returning to higher level sporting activities.

Ok, my fellow orthopaedic coders. I have a physician that performed a repair (suture) of the quadriceps tendon.
