Meter - a device for measuring the electric power and energy supplied to a customer. The electric meter exists so that the power company can monitor current usage and bill you accordingly. Inside, the glass houses the measuring devices that include dials and wheels on the older model meters. Meter sockets are specified by their continuous current rating and are designed for short term (three hours or less) overloads of 1. The main electrical service delivered to your house from the electrical utility company has a total available capacity, measured in amps, or amperes. Most homes have an electrical service of between 1to 2amps.

Amperage is a measurement of the volume of electricity flowing through wires, and this measurement can vary between amps in very old homes that have not been update to as much as 4amps in a very large home with extensive electric heating systems.

If a metallic bushing is used to connect the meter base to the switch box, it must be bonded with ground unless holes in the meter base and switch box were cut with a knockout kit. These wired meter poles are complete with meter socket, mast, and 200-amp main breaker (or fuses for 6volt rated disconnect poles). The breaker box includes unused breaker positions suitable for connecting outdoor electrical equipment such as heat pumps and water pumps. Sumter EMC will also deliver and set the meter pole for an additional fee. The construction toolbox provides builders and contractors information and tools necessary to help Duke Energy provide safe reliable electric service to their job site.

Installing new electric service is a joint project between the customer and the power company. The power company is responsible for bringing power to the site, for installing the meter in the socket provided by the customer, and for ener- gizing the service. Important update: PECO is not disconnecting service for non-payment until further notice. New late payment charges are currently suspended.

Once electricity is carried beyond your meter , it is distributed to lights, receptacles, and appliances throughout the house by several different electrical circuits. For electrical equipment mounted higher than feet, inches, this space shall extend to the top of the equipment. Each of these types of electrical service will have a different point of connection to the utility company, which will have an effect on the project overall.

The size of the wire for the electrical service will depend on the size of your main electrical service panel.
