Fiberglass boat transom repair replacement

How to replace boat stringers? If the fiberglass skin is in good condition, it is usually reused and glued back in place over the new core. The cuts made in the fiberglass skin to gain access are repaired with multiple layers of fiberglass cloth and epoxy. If you have an air compressor , a small air hammer with a wide flat blade is a good investment. Be careful to not inflict damage to the outside fiberglass skin.

Once the old plywood and putty are remove make a template of the transom using cardboar doorskin or cheap plywood. If your boat has an outboard you might actually replace the whole transom including the fiberglass on the outside. I only replaced the core and the Fiberglass on the inside. I had to make a few minor repairs to the fiberglass on the outside (the hull). This took a lot of time to figure out how to do everything correctly.


You can read a lot of glass boat repair manuals and never see anything on the self-repair of transoms. We remove the necessary components on your boat to be able to extract the old or damaged transom. We then use marine grade plywood to construct the shape and thickness of your original transom and reinforce it for durability. Repairing the transom is not that difficult if you have the right tools and equipment. Below is a detailed guideline on how to repair the transom on your boat.

To make any repairs to your boat or transom , you first need to get your boat out of the water and into a dry dock or a raised platform. Allow the transom to dry completely before you can start repairs. This is to give you more access to the transom.


The next step in the rebuild is the removal of the old plywood core and inside fiberglass transom skin. You will need access to the entire transom plus at least up the side and bottom of the boat. This means removing all the internal structure, seats, and tanks, etc.

To repair the holes, tape is used on the exterior to keep the filler from oozing out. Polyester or vinylester resin will work as well, but in this case, the owner of the boat asked me to use epoxy. Before planning a repair , comprehensive troubleshooting is recommended. A soft sole may hide rotten string-ers.


Rot in a transom may extend to the stringers. Decide what you will replace but be ready to discover hidden damage and a full repair. We will describe a complete replacement of transom , stringers and sole.
