Repair broken door jamb

How do you fix a damaged door frame? How to fix or replace a broken door frame? Any one of these things means it is time to repair the door jamb. The task is a simple process to complete. Remove any screws or nails from the damaged area of the doorjamb.


If you are repairing your broken door jamb , there are two parts for your solution.

Fill any gaps you have with wood filler. Use thin nails to connect the broken parts of the door jamb into the parts that aren’t broken. Remove the casing (The moulding, attached to the drywall surrounding the door and threshold if there is one) Now you can get to the jamb. Remove the jamb , and go to your lumberyard and get a piece of pine that approximates it in dimensions. Take care not to damage the stop as you remove it from the frame.


Place the claw end of the hammer on the side of each. In the video I try to fix it and create a more secure and polished result. A door jamb repair kit will usually consist of a heavy duty strike plate and a door jamb metal overlay to hide cracks and reinforce the frame.

Unscrew any latch plates, chains, bolts and other door hardware. Then use a chisel and hammer to pry the door strip away from the door jamb , starting from the bottom. As the timber starts to come away, put the claw of your hammer on either side of each nail to support the timber as it lifts off. In older homes, it is usually attached with nails, but newer homes often use wood screws.


Pull a piece up until you can see how it is attached. Then, either use a power drill to unscrew wood screws, or just pull the jamb free with the pry bar. Make sure to preserve the side of the door jamb with the hinges attached. What you want to replace is called the JAMB.


First of all, some terminology. You can either replace the whole thing (prefered) or try and fit a smaller piece in to fix the broken area. The thin piece that stops the door when it is closed. Pry it off with a small prybar, slot screw driver or whatever you can wedge underneath.

Another option for exterior doors is to add a clad system over the existing jamb. You can fill the holes a bit with toothpicks if you like, even use putty and repaint if you like as well. Scrape away any small chunks of wood that may be protruding from the door frame. Be sure your door can fully close.

If not, remove any wood that is preventing the door from closing. Assuming you mean wood or wood-product (like MDF) frame, here are a few previous similar questions which should help - interior door a bit cheaper than some exteriors because no brickmold or waterproofing, but not much cost difference. Place a block of scrap wood over the area and tap the glued pieces into the door jamb with a hammer.


Allow the glue to dry before sanding the area, applying auto body filler over the repair , letting it harden and sanding it smooth.
