Sex after rectocele repair surgery

What to expect after rectocele surgery? What are the risks of rectocele repair? How long after surgery can you have sex? Last Monday I had my surgery - cystocele repair , rectocele repair , TOT and cystoscopy.


Thus far I am doing okay though I am more uncomfortable today than in the past. Also, I think I am running a low grade temp - 101.

For pain I take tylenol extra strength during the day and percocet at night. I am still doing some spotting but the doc said. The rectocele repair can sometimes narrow the vaginal opening, depending on how your urogynecologist chooses to do the procedure. Kuhn A, Brunnmayr G, Stadlmayr W, et al.

I had a posterior repair for a rectocele last year. Possible long term complications from rectocele repair include narrowing or shortening of the vagina due to the healing process.

This could cause difficulty or pain with intercourse and may require dilation or a minor surgery to correct the narrowing. Don’t lift anything heavier than pounds for months after your surgery. Avoid strenuous exercise, such as running or jogging, for months after surgery.


Don’t have sexual intercourse or put anything in your vagina (such as tampons) for weeks after your surgery. Because rectocele repair is a major surgery , a doctor will often suggest it only after trying other treatments. Sometimes rectocele repair is done at the same time as a hysterectomy ( surgery to remove the uterus).

What can I expect during my recovery from rectocele repair surgery ? A rectocele occurs when the fascia, or tissue wall, between the rectum and vagina becomes weak and bulges into the vagina. It requires surgical repair when it becomes difficult or impossible to pass stool. I have a spell I give my patients post surgery. It goes- ‘no sex , exercise, lifting or straining.


No sex toys , no suppositories , no tampons or enemas. Nothing up there front or back for the next week. No taking out the bin, no mowing the lawns, no vacuuming or lifting heavy wet washing or small children for weeks.


Also no driving for weeks. Anterior repair appears to have a negative effect on sexual function only when it is combined with another procedure. Cystocele and rectocele can cause problems going to the bathroom such as frequent urination, urine leakage, and difficulty urinating.

Pain during sex may also occur. This surgery is done to help relieve these symptoms. Most often, this type of surgery is not done until all other treatments have been tried.


I AM WEEKS POST-OP RECTOCELE SURGERY. MY DOCTOR TOLD ME THAT MY VAGINAL AREA WOULD BE SHORTER AFTER SURGERY , DUE TO WHAT ALL HE DI AND THAT SEXUAL INTERCOURSE WOULD BE UNCOMFORTABLE. IT IS MORE THAN UNCOMFORTABLE,IT IS VERY PAINFUL!


The goal of rectocele repair is to strengthen the wall between the vagina and rectum. In this surgical procedure, the doctor will make an incision into the back wall of the vagina. The layers under the vaginal wall are then sutured together in such a way as to tighten the tissues and reinforce the strength of the wall.
